We wanted to let you know of an opportunity coming up for your children. One of the teachings that we have connection to is the FireQuest where an individual has the opportunity to experience tending their own fire throughout a night.
We feel to offer this experience to the young people we work with this September. It is generally understood that a minimum age for this experience would be 12 years old however those on the cusp who feel a strong call to this could also be considered at our discretion.
In a nutshell it would be in the form of a community fire in a central location from which the young people would go out. The young people fast from food and go out to find their site with support from mentors, prepare their space and gather what's needed to light a fire and tend it from sun set to sun rise the following morning. At sunrise they would aim to tend their fire out (without water etc) and once it is fully out they return and are welcomed back to the community fire. The community fire will be lit before the young people go out and is tended throughout the night by designated fire tenders in the community that 'pass the batton' through the night. The community fire would then be tended down as the young people's stories are harvested in some way.
It would be great to be able to host families and close friends to some extent so that it is brought into the awareness and culture we're cultivating. This way younger children in the group or siblings can have some sense of experiencing what they are moving towards.
For now we wanted to bring this into your awareness and to get a sense of who feels called to quest. If you have a 12+ yr old in one of our ongoing groups, please have a light chat with them about it. We have spoken with most of the groups with children of that age but not all yet. The date we are proposing is the Autumn Equinox weekend 27-29 Sep and it looks likely that it will be held at Hawthbush Farm, Gun Hill.
